Iquitos and the Amazonas

Iquitos is one of the largest cities found in the jungle of ​​Peru. This city is located in the province of Maynas, in the department of Loreto and is the capital of the region to which it belongs.

Iquitos is a city that presents sites steeped in history, such as the Malecón de Tarapacá, to the length of which the houses of those wealthy men who long ago came to the city possessed by the rubber rush were built. Today, the boardwalk, which is also called the boulevard, is a beautiful viewpoint, both for observing the mansions and the Itaya River. Between the houses that are in this malecón it is possible to emphasize to the call House of Iron, that is considered the first prefabricated house of the country and that was nothing less than designed by Eiffel in the year 1897.

Another emblematic residence of Iquitos is the Casa de Barro that previously served as a rubber warehouse, and which is located in the Plaza de Armas of the city. The Plaza de Armas of Iquitos is also a beautiful public place that is surrounded by the main government buildings of the city, as well as the Iquitos Cathedral dating from the first decade of the twentieth century and featuring an interesting neo-Gothic design.

In Iquitos there are also different cultural spaces that can be visited by the participants, among them the Amazon Museum that was built at the beginning of the sixties of the 19th century and in which beautiful sculptures are presented in which the different groups are represented of the Selva del Perú. The Municipal Museum, is also another cultural space available to visit in Iquitos, this museum concentrates its collection in the exhibition of handcrafted pieces elaborated by the residents of the city (throughout its history and distinguishing its ethnic groups); as well as different samples of the animals found in this area of ​​the Amazon.

In Iquitos it is also possible to find some emblematic towns, as is the case of Belén, a neighborhood that is characterized because the houses of its residents are made on rafts, so they can be seen floating in the beautiful waters of the Itaya River. Towards this neighborhood it is only possible to arrive in the craft canoes that are found in the coves of Iquitos and that, many times, are the only means of transport to get to know the different cities and towns around the city.

One more attraction of the city of Iquitos, besides the Itaya River is the impressive Amazon River that presents in its beautiful navigable waters a great ichthyological richness (more than 200 types of fish) and that nourishes in its prolonged course an incredible number of rivers minors This river is visited both by those who want to sail in the different boats that are available in Iquitos, as well as by those interested in acquiring, through fishing, one of the varied fish species that the river presents.

Iquitos is the main access to visit and explore the Amazonas River with its savage nature.
