Lima

Lima is capital of Peru. It was founded in 1535. More than 11 million people lives in this big metropolis that coexists with the Port of Callao.

The weather is temperate, and temperatures vary between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius from April to November and 21 to 28 degrees Celsius from December to March.

 

History

Lima was founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquerors as the “City of Kings”. However, before its foundation as a colonial city there were several pre-Inca and Inca peoples who settled in their lands.

Throughout its history Lima has been the capital of Peru: from the Viceroyalty to our days. It is because of what has suffered from constant transformations and has become a city of contrasts and a microcosm of the History of Peru.

We can find vestiges of all the epochs through which the country has crossed and that have left traces in all the cultural manifestations of the city.

Within the city we can also find numerous ruins of civilizations before the Spanish and the Incas included; highlighting those of the Inca citadel of Pachacamac and the ceremonial centers of Pucllana, Huallamarca and Puruchuco.

In addition, Lima has an impressive architecture: majestic churches among which the oldest in America stand out; beautiful colonial and republican buildings, as well as innumerable plazas that are mostly in the Historic Center and in some traditional districts.

Lima is a modern city that has all the services and amenities that can be found in the big cities of the world. Here we can find financial and commercial areas, large stores and other services.

Only one or two hours from Lima you can visit splendid landscapes: beaches, countryside, ruins, fauna and abundant flora; that will allow you to get in touch with nature.

Being a modern city, Lima has a very varied and cheerful nightlife, where the traditional and the modern combine to the moment of fun: it can be found from “peñas” (night clubs where typical Creole music is heard and danced). Gastronomy

The food of Peru in general deserves special mention because it has one of the best and most varied cuisines in the world, and Lima is considered the gastronomical capital of South America.

In Lima you can find all the cuisines of our country prepared in different ways, from very simple to very sophisticated; and of all types and prices. From the “chifa” (Chinese-Peruvian food) to the original “pollo a la brasa”, going through all the regional foods and the wonderful Creole food from Lima.

The popular “cebiche”, a traditional Peruvian dish made with fish or shellfish. And as a companion a limeñísimo “pisco sour”, our national drink.
