Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado is located within the province of Tambopata in Madre de Dios and is both provincial and departmental capital.

Among the attractions of the urban center of Puerto Maldonado is the Obelisk, which has a height of almost fifty meters, at the base of which are sculptures that show the main economic activities practiced in the region. Climbing to the top of this viewpoint allows the visitor to enjoy a great view of the city.

In the surroundings of Puerto Maldonado are also attractive tourist sites such as Lake Sandoval, which is located in the Tambopata National Reserve and is surrounded by aguajales. Currently, in the area that encloses the location of the lake, a project called Sandoval Site Plan has been managed to recognize it as a protected area. Another nearby lake is Lago Valencia, around which settle native communities and in which it is possible to observe beautiful sunsets. In Lake Valencia also, you can practice fishing species such as maidens, paiches, among others.

In this city is also part of one of the most important reserves of the country, the National Park of Manú that is divided into three sectors, one of which is inhabited by native communities far from contact with other civilization. Other parks that register part of their territory in Puerto Maldonado are the Tambopata-Candamo and also the Bahuaja Sonene Park.

If the visitor is interested in knowing this city during its celebrations, it is recommended that he visit it especially around July 10, when different events are held in honor of the anniversary of its foundation.

Keep in mind that, when you are in Puerto Maldonado, you will feel the typical heat of these areas of the Amazon and often exceeding 30 °C so you should provide comfortable clothes for the trip, as well as the necessary resources (especially water) if you plan walks around the town.
